What 'culture fit' actually means
It's not free snacks. It's how a team handles a 9 PM Tuesday — and that's something you can ask about in the interview.

A worn-out phrase
"Culture fit" gets used to justify all kinds of decisions, including bad ones. Strip it down and it's really about three things:
- How decisions get made
- How disagreement happens
- How busy seasons end
Questions that actually work
In your final-round interview, try:
- "Walk me through how a deadline slipped on a recent project. What changed afterwards?"
- "What time do people typically wrap up on a busy Tuesday?"
- "When did you last push back on a senior leader — and what happened?"
Watch what the room does with these. Defensive answers tell you everything.
What to listen for
- A real example beats a slogan. Every time.
- "Work-life balance" is a phrase. "We rotate weekends during peak" is a policy.
- The way they describe their worst quarter is more informative than their best.
A thing to remember
"Culture is what happens when you're not in the room."
You can't fully test for it from outside — but you can rule out the obvious mismatches with sharper questions.
