Sharpening your spreadsheet skills without going overboard
Whatever your field, you don't need to be a power user. You need to be reliably fast at six things. Here's the short list.

It's tempting to grind through entire courses on power features. Most of them you'll never use. Whether you're in ops, marketing, research, or product, what separates fast users from slow ones is fluency in a small set.

- INDEX/MATCH (or XLOOKUP) — replace every VLOOKUP. Faster, more robust.
- IFERROR + named ranges — fewer broken cells, fewer fire drills.
- Pivot tables with date grouping — month/quarter rollups in 10 seconds.
- Conditional formatting on top — make the outlier visible before the meeting.
- F2 / F4 / Ctrl+Shift+L — three keys that save you minutes every day.
- Sumifs / Countifs — replace half your manual filters.
What to skip (for now)
- Power Query — useful, but not the bottleneck for most early-career professionals.
- VBA — interesting; rarely the answer.
- Dashboards as art — speed first, decoration later.
