Do you actually need that certification?

The default answer is "not yet"

Whatever your field — engineering, design, nursing, marketing, teaching — there is a certification someone is selling you as the missing key. Sometimes it is. Usually it's a way to feel like you're moving without having to face the harder question underneath.

Get it if…

• A role you actually want lists it as a hard requirement, and you've checked more than one posting.
• It unlocks the legal right to practise (many healthcare, finance, and safety roles genuinely require it).
• You learn far better with an external deadline and a syllabus than on your own.

Skip it (for now) if…

• You're using it to avoid applying. A portfolio, a shipped project, or a reference beats a certificate for most roles.
• The skill it teaches can be shown directly — code you wrote, a campaign you ran, a case you handled.
• You can't name the specific job it gets you closer to.

The honest test

"If this certificate were invisible on my resume, would the work I did to earn it still make me better at the job?"

If yes, do it — the paper is a bonus. If no, you're buying reassurance, not a career move.
